RESULTS: After two years the IDEFICS intervention showed only minor effects on an individual level, but sustainable effects on the community and the setting level. After five years a beneficial change in the consumption of sugar and water could be observed in the intervention families and children who were overweight and obese at baseline showed favorable weight trajectories. This paper reports on the effectiveness of the prevention of dietary‐ and lifestyle‐induced health effects in children and infants (IDEFICS) intervention on objectively measured physical activity (PA) and sedentary time (ST) in 2‐ to 9.9‐year‐old European boys and girls. A main aspect of the IDEFICS project consisted in the elaboration of evidence-based guidelines on preventing diet- and lifestyle-related diseases for different groups (consumers, channels, policy makers). This intervention part of the IDEFICS study examines the feasibility, effectiveness and sustainability of a coherent set of intervention modules addressing diet, physical activity and coping with The IDEFICS intervention consists of a general and standardized intervention framework that allows for cultural adaptation to make the intervention feasible and to enhance deliverability in all participating countries.
